I get lots of questions about what instruments are acceptable for students to use at home while practicing between lessons.

Choosing a piano/keyboard

  • Number of keys

A standard piano has 88 keys. This is the preferred number of keys for an acoustic or digital instrument. If you are unable to get an 88-key instrument due to the size or for financial reasons, there are smaller acceptable options, especially for beginning students. It is recommended that an instrument with at least 73 full-size keys be used if an 88 key version is not possible.

  • Touch Sensitive/Weighted Keys

Touch sensitive means that dynamics (different volumes) can be played by touch pressure not by adjusting a dial or slide. Dynamics is a crucial part of learning to play piano and keyboard. Knowing when a piece should be loud and when it should be soft and playing accordingly allows the performance to come to to life and to match the intentions of the composer.

Weighted keys (or semi weighted keys) means that there is some resistance felt when keys are played. This allows the student to develop the necessary hand and finger strength to play correctly. Weighted keys are also typical for touch sensitive volume control as described above.

  • Accessories

In order to develop proper playing technique it is also important to have certain accessories to use with your keyboard. These include a bench, sustain pedal, and music stand.

A bench provides the proposed the proper place to sit while playing.

A sustain pedal allows the musician to control the length of held notes when interpreting the music written by the composer.

A music stand provides a place to hold book or piece of sheet music that is being played. The stand typically rests on top of the keyboard adjacent to the keys directly in front of the player.

Below are some options for keyboards and accessories based on the factors discussed above. If you choose not to select from the options below, please be sure to carefully consider the discussion items above when selecting other options.
